New Balance – Flimby

Continuing on the running theme, a post from David.

There was always great excitement if, during childhood trips to the Lake District we popped in to the New Balance Factory at Flimby to have a mooch through the sample bins and oddments. New Balance is the only domestic manufacturer of sports shoes. So if you want to cut the carbon emissions it takes to import your shoes from Asia or just want to support UK Craftsmen (many of which were recruited following the closure of domestic shoe manufacturers across the North West in the 80′s) maybe you should look to NB next time.

Men’s running

David is all for ‘hiding his light under a bushel’ but I thought you might like to see this. He won the Brighton half marathon in 2010 and 2011 and was approached by Men’s Running Magazine (bit of a dodgy sub heading ‘for runners with balls’ mmm…) to talk about running, winning and his secret. The answer of course, sheer hard slog. Well done Dave!

Young Souls

If I wasn’t due to have a baby in five days (wishful thinking, the last one was two weeks late!) I’d waddle into London to see Dean Chalkley’s Young Souls exhibition. It’s on at PYMCA’s central London Gallery, Youth Club, just off Carnaby Street… great images celebrating today’s Northern Soul scene. Who knows, maybe when I’m a bit more aerodynamic we might even make it to a gig.

Kettles Yard

Ever heard of Kettles Yard? Cambridge is probably better known for punting and the university, but I’d make a day trip for this place alone.

It was originally the home of Jim Ede (Curator at the Tate Gallery London) who gathered an amazing collection of artworks and sculpture – all of which can be viewed in his home alongside his everyday household objects. We’re so used to seeing high profile works by artists like Joan Miro, Ben Nicholson and Lucie Rie in gallery spaces, but very rarely hanging on the bedroom wall. This informal setting makes for a refreshing and intimate experience.

Jim Ede left the house to Cambridge University in 1966 and thankfully it is still possible to have a wander round… just pop along and ring the bell.

Get organised – 2012 calendars!

We’ve been wanting to create a wall calendar for yonks and have finally got round to it. No excuses for us to be late and disorganised in 2012 now. There are two hand drawn designs (created at our kitchen table) and each will be available in a choice of two colourways – they’ll be on the website soon, but if you can’t wait just email us!

First up, the doodle calendar. Something quite gratifying about taking the organisation and structure of a year planner and creating it from random, scribbly doodles!

From Solitaire colouring books to Victore Vasarely posters – we’ve always been fascinated by geometric pattern and tessellating shapes. The calendar was an ideal opportunity to create some unique patterns of our own.

Happy shopping!
